Choose “Meetings” or “My voice”. Allow microphone and speech recognition access. Download offline dictation packs and translation models for the chosen pair. Hold your unlocked iPhone about 30 cm from your mouth with SubVocal open. Whisper, read the result and tap “Speak”.

The interface is also available in Polish, but it does not recognize Polish whispers, speak Polish, or translate from or into Polish. This also applies to “My voice” and “Their turn”.

At first launch, the app saves one pair. For a supported language other than English, it is that language ↔ English. For English and languages outside the translation list, including Polish: English ↔ Spanish. The pair works in both directions.

No. The two language codes remain in the iPhone keychain. Changing the menu language, “Erase everything stored” and reinstalling do not change the free pair. Pro unlocks other pairs.

In SubVocal Settings, choose “Language of the app”, then reopen the app. There are 14 menu languages to choose from. The change does not change the translation pair or unlock features.

Open iPhone Settings → General → Keyboard. Add a keyboard for the required variant, enable dictation and select that variant in dictation languages if the list is visible. For example, you need US English and Spanish from Spain. The pack may take several hundred megabytes; download it over Wi-Fi when possible. The download requires internet. Availability depends on the language and iPhone. Return to SubVocal and check the microphone status.

This is the standard speech recognition permission message. SubVocal requires on-device recognition and disables server recognition. Without the appropriate offline pack, it does not start listening rather than sending your voice elsewhere.

No. You choose both languages yourself. The conversation proceeds sentence by sentence, one person at a time.

In SubVocal Settings → Whisper → End of sentence, choose “Long pause”. The sentence ends after about 2.5 seconds of silence instead of one, and the maximum length of a single utterance increases from 12 to 30 seconds. “Translate now” ends it immediately. The feature is free.

Enable “Message from several sentences” in the whisper settings. Tap the plus beside a ready sentence and whisper the next one. “Back to the message” stops adding. “Speak” says the whole message; the cross deletes it all. This feature is free.

It is text that follows the voice. Spoken words are highlighted while the rest is dimmed. Longer text scrolls to the sentence being played. It works automatically and for free. The iOS “Reduce Motion” setting disables the scrolling animation.

Tap “Their turn” and point the phone towards the other person. Their reply appears as translated text, without spoken playback. “My turn” returns to your side. This feature requires two different languages and an offline dictation pack for the other person's language too.

Choose “Show the sentence to the other person”. The text appears in large letters on a black background, rotated towards the person on the other side of the phone. The “Their turn” button lets you move to their reply.

“Speak for me” turns your whisper into speech in the same language. It is free in both languages of your pair. You can also type text or use saved phrases through “Say this”. Tapping “Say it” with typed text starts speech immediately. No Polish.

SubVocal uses the best installed voice for the language. Find voices in iOS accessibility settings and download a Premium or enhanced version for the correct language variant. You can also change the rate in SubVocal.

A sentence containing a recognized word from your list is held. It is spoken only after “Say anyway”. This tool is free. An incorrectly recognized word may go undetected.

Check the listening status, microphone and recognition permissions, selected language and its offline pack. Bring the iPhone closer and whisper beside the microphone. If a call or another app interrupted audio, return to SubVocal and tap the microphone. In noise, use “Say this”.

Requires iOS 18 or later. The app must be open on an unlocked screen. Apple Intelligence is needed only for Diplomat mode.

SubVocal does not use the headphone microphone. You still whisper to your iPhone. Connected headphones may change where audio plays: check where you can hear the sentence before a conversation. An iPhone with iOS 18 or later is enough for a basic conversation. Additional hardware is not a requirement for using SubVocal.

Apple Watch is optional and works together with the iPhone.

Your whisper is heard by the iPhone's built-in microphone. SubVocal does not listen in the background. Locking the screen or changing apps stops the microphone and clears the current sentence. Check the Auto-Lock setting before a longer conversation.

No. SubVocal is designed for face-to-face conversations. It does not capture call audio, and a call on the same iPhone interrupts listening.

Yes, after downloading the required dictation packs and translation models. Pro can also work offline thanks to its remembered purchase status. Internet is needed for downloads and to buy or restore Pro.

Shortcut and Spotlight names follow your iPhone language. Siri voice commands for SubVocal are available only in English.

Diplomat mode requires Pro, an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence, iOS 26 or later, and Apple Intelligence enabled. The iPhone and Siri languages must be the same and supported by Apple Intelligence. Polish is not supported. The other Pro features do not require Apple Intelligence.

Manage your annual subscription in iPhone Settings › Apple Account › Subscriptions. Cancel at least 24 hours before the trial or billing period ends. Cancel during the free trial and nothing is charged. Buying “SubVocal Pro Forever” does not cancel an active annual subscription. Apple handles purchases and refunds. You can request a refund through reportaproblem.apple.com.

A one-time purchase does not automatically cancel your annual subscription. Cancel it in your Apple Account subscription settings to avoid further renewals. SubVocal reminds you in its settings.

After the current conversation ends, you return to the free pair and WORLD. The glossary stays saved but is not applied without Pro. The other free tools keep working.

It does not save recordings or a history of transcripts and translations. Your own lists and settings are saved separately.

Saved lists are encrypted with a key that never leaves this iPhone. They are included in an iPhone backup if you make one, but cannot be read on another device. Transfer them to a new iPhone using a file (“Export to a file”). SubVocal does not sync them through iCloud.

On the old iPhone, choose SubVocal Settings → Moving to a new device → Export to a file. Transfer the file, then choose Import from a file on the new device. Import adds entries and deletes nothing. The file contains readable lists, including “Never say”; check who you share it with. Restore Pro on the same Apple Account. Download language models again.

Deletes lists, settings and the current utterance. Does not change the free pair or Pro purchase, and does not delete exported files.

Apple handles model downloads and purchases. If you allow it in iOS Settings, it may share anonymised crash reports and usage statistics with the developer. These are system mechanisms, not analytics added to SubVocal. The Privacy page explains the details.
